I've spent plenty of time at the gym over the years. While there, I have treated my body almost as the enemy, trying to beat it into submission and make it look a particular way. My time doing yoga could not be more different. Here at The Albany Yoga Room, my body is at last my friend. It seems that as I stretch my body I also stretch my mind's capacity to appreciate my own body - what it can do and how it looks. Yoga is perfect for anyone who has battled against their body but has now come to a point in their life where it's time to make a new friend!

'A fabulous way to build and maintain a strong and fluid body and mind. The Yoga Room is a safe environment in which to work at your own pace while respecting your body's limitations. '

I started at Albany Yoga Room two years ago. It is such a heart warming experience right from the very beginning when you open the door to go in and you are greeted by a wonderful aromatherapy smell, then it’s shoes off and up the stairs to be welcomed always by the smiling face of a teacher. The quietness and calmness is really nourishing after a busy day and that's without even starting on the yoga! For me it is a real retreat from the outside world and a time to just focus on me and take care of myself - with no outside pressures. The teachers are really lovely and are all very supportive and encouraging and totally non judgmental. I just love my 'yoga time' and can't imagine life without it now.

I've been going to the Albany Yoga Room for about a year and I honestly don't know what I'd do without it. Sue and the other tutors are encouraging and totally dedicated to everyone having the best experience that they can have in the class irrespective of their level of experience or ability. Yoga makes my body feel flexible and strong and my mind calm and focused. It has helped me to find a better quality of sleep and has given me skills and techniques that I can use anytime when I need to relax.

I started Yoga with Sue at the Albany Yoga Room about 3 years ago after doing Pilates quite regularly for 4 years and found that I enjoyed the less ‘frenetic’ pace of Yoga. Sue's instruction was easy to follow and the other students were supportive and encouraging. Yoga is not competitive, and like everyone else at class some poses come more easily to me than others, but in all poses I have definitely improved - I am stronger and my flexibility is significantly better.
Being taught to breathe correctly at the age of 58 seems absurd, but don’t knock it. Deeper and fuller breathing has helped me with better deportment, patience and given me a sense of serenity and happiness.......well most of the time anyway. I manage to deal with the hiccups in life more easily and calmly.
Most importantly to me, Yoga has made me a nicer person........I don’t know why, it just has.
I have encouraged 3 other friends to Yoga (2 of whom are closer to 70 than 60) and they too have felt almost immediate benefits to posture and to strength.
Please give it a go, I am sure you will be glad you did. You even get a lie down at the end of class....just brilliant.....and you don’t even need fancy gear to do it in....fabulous!

I wasn’t new to yoga when I first came to Albany Yoga Room, but they have set a new benchmark for me and I still miss their classes after moving city-side some time ago (especially the delicious relaxation at the end of each class). The studio is modern and comfortable. All the teachers are truly gorgeous people. Sue in particular is a wonderful teacher who takes a genuine interest in each class member, patiently guiding and correcting, and gently ‘pushing’ for improvement while taking individual factors into consideration. People of all ages and stages attend, and all are welcomed and allowed to practise at their own pace. I thoroughly recommend Albany Yoga Room, and only wish they would clone themselves for a central Auckland studio :)

I have attended classes at Albany Yoga Room on and off for the last seven years. Each time I come back, I am greeted with a warm smile.
As I have moved around in this time I have had many yoga teachers and I find each one quite different. I would highly recommend Sue as the best yoga teacher I have ever had. (Although I have never worked with any other teachers at the Albany Yoga Room I have heard they all teach in slightly different ways so finding the one that best suits you is important.)
Sue is very good at paying attention to the needs of all the students in her class. She teaches you how to get the best personal benefit from each pose while working within your own limitations rather than trying to look like the other students in the class.
