Interested in natural health, healing and meditation since the 1970's, Susan began following a path of meditational yoga in 1980.
She discovered Iyengar yoga in 1986 and practised throughout her three pregnancies, beginning informal teacher training in 1993. The following year she completed a formal one year teacher training course at the Ananda Kutir ashram in Cape Town where the teachings of Desikachar and Swami Shivananda, emphasising the integration of asana (posture), pranayama (breathing) and meditation, are followed. Throughout this period she continued to practise the Iyengar style of yoga as well.
Susan has continued studying and practising with various senior teachers from abroad, especially Donna Farhi, who periodically visit Auckland offering workshops in teacher training and personal practice. In 1996 she began teaching yoga, and through her own practice and study, continues to deepen her knowledge and understanding of yoga.
However she has never forgotten her very first yoga class and the challenges and difficulties that present themselves to the beginner student. Her approach as a teacher, although sometimes challenging, is always compassionate.
